President Christ Outlines Smith's Current Successes and Future Challenges
Meeting Minutes
March 25, 2003
October 2, 2003-- Smith College President Carol T. Christ chronicled the college's recent successes and challenges at an alumnae reception held at the St. Louis Art Museum.  She described the physical changes to the campus such as the renovations to the Art Museum and the Lyman Plant House.  She also talked about how the newly opened Campus Center has made an immediate impact upon student life at Smith.  President Christ also highlighted various programs at the College inlcuding the Poetry Center, the Kahn Institute and the Center for Women and Financial Independence.

Current budget challenges to the college were also a topic of discussion.  President Christ noted that the endowment has suffered from the conditions in the stock market and that the amount of alumnae gifts have decreased.  She also cited current employee health insurance as being a significant cost to the college. These times called for "more careful stewardship" of the college's finances according to President Christ.  In response to a question from the audience, President Christ outlined the college's current plan for re-examining the dining system, which she assured the alums was only in the fact finding stage.
