| Return to Profiles List |

Sharmeen Obaid

In the summer of 2004, we hosted a screening of Sharmeen's documentary "Reinventing the Taliban." Sharmeen has since graduated from Stanford's graduate school of journalism, and has ventured back into the thick of the Middle East. She's a correspondent for the New York Times and for PBS' "Frontline."

One of Sharmeen's most recent reports was a September 2004 "Frontline" story called "Pakistan: The Hunt for Osama bin Laden." Read it here: http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/elections/pakistan/.

Sharmeen recently won 2 awards for her first documentary, "Terror's Children," which chronicled the lives of Afghan children in a Pakistani refugee camp in the months after 9/11:

  • The American Women in Television & Radio award for Individual Achievement for Best Reporter
  • The Overseas Press Club Award for best international reporting in any medium showing a concern for the human condition
